Another bike ride starting from Wycoller village just over the border in Lancashire this time picking up the Pendle Way towards Coldwell Reservoir part of the Pennine Bridleway.

Pleasant, open and quiet is the only way to describe the first two thirds of this route. But later including some superb technical off roading alongside the ravine past Saucer Hill. Ending finally with a tricky rocky descent towards Turnhole Clough bridge and a steaming fast return on the Smith Clough descent back to Wycoller.

Overall, a top quality ride, we never met another soul, so if solitude is your thing, heres the place to go.

Start point
Wycoller Village

The Route

  • Exit Wycoller carpark left, then 1st left Keighley Road and left onto Church Street through Trawden Village (past the huge jam bowl)
  • Right B6250 towards Hebden Bridge (Burnley Road) after a long tarmac climb, right at the junction onto Back Lane towards Coldwell
  • Pass Coldwell Activity centre and upper Coldwell reservoir on your right, look out for a bridalway sign on your left just before lower Coldwell reservoir.
  • From this point follow Pennine Bridalway (PBW) signs towards Wycoller, it is well signposted. A long straight bridalway follows.
  • The bridleway eventually transforms into rough and rocky packhorse track running parallel to a drystone wall.. Watch out for the ravine at Saucer Hill, you ride next to a sheer 20 foot drop on your right, in strong winds its lethal, but fun.
  • Continue as the bridalway descends eventually at a bridge (Turnhole Clough) which you cross and through the gate
  • at the 2nd gate on your left (the first is a public footpath. Follow the path toward Wycoller village.

Food

Whitesides deli and butchers, a mile or so away at the Winewall/Colne/Carleton roundabout, on route just a post office and couple of pubs in Trawden and a Cafe at Wycoller.
